Where to go in Arkhyz: locations, routes and guide tips

Hi, Murat from Visoko v Gorah here. Every season I see the same thing in Arkhyz: guests arrive for two days, open the map, see dozens of beautiful names and freeze. Sofia, Phiya, Marukh, White Waterfalls, Bottomless Lake - everything sounds good, but where should you go today? Below is a practical guide: which locations to choose, how to go, where you need a guide and where a short walk is enough.

Our experience: 15 years in Arkhyz, our own fleet and guides who lead proven routes and know less crowded trails.

  • Date: 2026-04-20
  • Route status: Summer locations are selected by weather, group level and trip goal: views, waterfalls, lakes or a more active route.
  • Best for: Families, Groups of friends, Couples, Guests with no mountain experience

Short answer

If this is your first Arkhyz trip, start with the Sofia direction or White Waterfalls. For strong views without a long climb, choose jeep tours or ATV tours. For quiet nature, lakes and a full mountain day, choose a guided hiking route.

  • First visit: Sofia glaciers and White Waterfalls.
  • Panoramas: Phiya Pass, Marukh Gorge and Mount Dzhangur.
  • Water and photos: White Waterfalls, Bottomless Lake and Unnamed Lake.
  • Active day: ATVs, jeep tour or multi-tour.
  • Calm trekking: guided hiking routes with an early start.

How to choose Arkhyz locations

The main rule: choose the right format for your group, not just the most famous spot. Almost every Arkhyz location is beautiful, but logistics shape the experience: driving time, walking time, elevation, stops and backup options if weather changes.

We work with popular mass routes, so we usually keep the plan practical. A family with children needs one pace, a group of friends another, and a couple with a camera a third.

If time is short, choose a location where the road itself is part of the experience. If you have a full day, go deeper to lakes, passes and quieter places.

  • 1-2 hours: short overview rides, photo stops and nearby waterfalls.
  • 3-5 hours: Sofia direction, White Waterfalls, Marukh and Phiya.
  • Full day: lakes, location combinations, multi-tours and hiking routes.
  • No experience: choose a ready guided tour with clear return logistics.

Sofia glaciers and the Sofia direction

The Sofia direction is an Arkhyz classic. It is the place for scale: glaciers, a wide valley, river, snowy peaks and a real Caucasus feeling.

The format can be adjusted: ATV tour, jeep tour, hiking route or a multi-tour. For a first visit, this is often the easiest strong choice.

I recommend it to guests who want a powerful visual impression without spending the day guessing. Start early: clouds and traffic usually grow after lunch in season.

  • Best format: ATVs or jeep tour for more views with less hard climbing.
  • For hiking: bring time reserve, water, wind layer and proper shoes.
  • For photos: morning and late afternoon give softer light.

White Waterfalls: water, fresh air and quick emotions

White Waterfalls are clear and rewarding: arrive, walk a scenic section, hear the water, take photos and breathe. For many guests this is the ideal first Arkhyz route.

I often recommend it to families and mixed groups. Someone wants activity, someone wants photos, someone is tired after the road. This location usually brings everyone into one comfortable scenario.

After rain trails can be slippery, so shoes matter more than they seem.

  • Best for: families, couples and first Arkhyz excursions.
  • Bring: shoes with grip, light wind layer and water.
  • How to go: jeep, ATV or a combined guided route.

Marukh Gorge: calm mountain strength

Marukh Gorge does not always shout from the first minute, but it gradually takes your attention. Valley depth, river, rocks, greenery and real mountain quiet work together here.

This is a good choice if you do not need a speed attraction. Marukh opens at a calmer pace: stop, look at the water, walk a section, stop again.

I would recommend Marukh to guests who have already seen central Arkhyz spots or want atmosphere, not just a checklist.

  • Clear weather works especially well: the gorge catches light beautifully.
  • Good for groups, families and guests who like long valley views.
  • Combines well with other locations in a multi-tour format.

Phiya Pass: panoramas and the feeling of the road

Phiya is a route where the road itself matters: climbs, turns, ridges opening up, forest changing into open space. If you want a mountain road experience, look here.

I do not recommend going to Phiya randomly, especially after rain or in poor visibility. The views are generous, but mountains do not reward rushing.

This direction suits guests ready for road, elevation changes and weather surprises. The reward is honest: panoramas, air and the feeling of reaching a real point on the map.

  • Best for: active groups, couples and panorama lovers.
  • Format: jeep tour, ATVs or a multi-tour combination.
  • Important: check route condition on the departure day.

Bottomless and Unnamed lakes: a full mountain day

Arkhyz lakes require a different rhythm. This is not just arrive, step out and take three photos. You need time, energy and normal preparation.

Bottomless Lake is chosen for altitude, quiet and a deeper route feeling. Unnamed Lake is good for guests who want a beautiful destination with real mountain character.

If you have not hiked for a while, do not turn the day into a battle with your knees. Choose a shorter route or go with a guide.

  • For: prepared guests, calm trekking groups and lake lovers.
  • Important: early start, water, food, rain layer and warm layer.
  • How to go: guided hiking tour or combined format to the trailhead.

Mount Dzhangur and Mount Dzhisa: views without the crowd

Some locations are not always first in conversation, but later guests say they were unexpectedly strong. Dzhangur and Dzhisa are like that: more air, ridge lines and open space.

These directions suit guests who have already visited the popular spots or want a less obvious route. Less obvious does not mean random: weather, road state and group level still matter.

Pace is especially important here. You can rush through, but then half the value stays outside the window.

  • Good for photos, calm groups and repeat Arkhyz trips.
  • Better with a guide: it is easier to choose a point for the weather.
  • Can be part of an individual route or multi-tour.

Hiking, jeep or ATV: how not to miss the format

Short version: hiking is for quiet and depth, jeep tours are for comfort and coverage, ATVs are for activity and the road as part of the adventure. There is no bad format, only a format that does not match your goal.

For mass travel, ready routes usually win: clear timing, guide support and checked logistics. This does not remove adventure, it removes unnecessary stress.

If you search for Arkhyz tours or Arkhyz excursions and want a clear commercial choice, start with tour formats and prices, then choose the location.

  • ATVs: active format, popular routes and many emotions in a short time.
  • Jeep tours: comfortable for family, groups and rougher roads.
  • Hiking routes: more nature, quiet and immersion.
  • Multi-tours: several impressions in one day.

My first-time route plan

If friends came for two days and asked where to go to understand Arkhyz, I would not start with the hardest route. Day one: Sofia direction or White Waterfalls. Day two: Phiya, Marukh or lakes, if weather and energy allow.

This plan gives balance: first a clear strong location, then a deeper route. Guests do not get exhausted on day one and do not leave with only a parking lot and a piece of mountain in fog.

Do not try to pack all Arkhyz into one day. The mountains are better when you have time for a stop, tea, photos and quiet.

  • Day 1: Sofia glaciers or White Waterfalls.
  • Day 2: Marukh, Phiya, Bottomless Lake or Unnamed Lake.
  • With children: short jeep tour or route with frequent stops.
  • Active group: ATVs or multi-tour for more dynamics.

Complex part: weather, season and safety

Arkhyz changes quickly. Morning can be sunny, afternoon cloudy, evening windy. A normal route is not just a beautiful point in a description, but also a backup scenario.

In summer bring water, a hat, wind layer and shoes with proper soles. In spring and autumn add a warm layer. After rain, respect mud and route changes.

For budget planning, start with prices for Arkhyz tours, then choose the format. This reduces surprises and makes group planning easier.

  • Start in the morning: more light, fewer people and a better visibility chance.
  • Do not go to lakes without water, food and a warm layer.
  • For rough roads, choose a guided jeep tour or ATV format.
  • For a first visit, do not choose maximum difficulty: Arkhyz opens better gradually.

You do not need to conquer Arkhyz. You need to choose the right location, pace, format and start time. Then Arkhyz tours and excursions give not only good photos, but a good mountain day. Start with popular routes, watch the weather and ask the guide early.
